Stress has actually become an epidemic in today's society. People are more stressed out than ever before, and the number of people with this "issue" is rising. Why are we so stressed out these days? Probably because every one runs through life at warp speed, not stopping to appreciate the smaller things. If we don't change our lifestyle anytime soon, we will become one high-strung, on edge, stressed-out nation. Here are some tips to help loosen the reins on our tight schedules. Life can be enjoyable, as long as we learn how to cope with stress.
1 - Do not worry about things that you can't control. People get wound up about things like weather, traffic, and long lines in the grocery stores. If we all just realized that these are normal parts of life, we'd be much happier. Unfortunately, people think they can control everything around them these days, but this is just not true. So, get over the fact that someone just passed you in the right lane on the highway, because there isn't much you can do about it.
2 - Find a hobby. It seems that people in current times don't do anything for themselves, meaning, they are too busy to even entertain a hobby. Make time for yourself and find something that you love to do. Start painting, read a book, bake, garden...anything that you love to do for YOU.
3 - Listen to other's opinions and engage in friendly conversation. Try and fix conflicts between friends, co-workers, or family. We tend to shut people down, these days, because we think we are always right! Well guess what, the only way to actually resolve issues is to listen. If you work on your people skills, you will realize it's not so bad to have a meaningful conversation, and that there are numerous sides to consider when working through a conflict.
4 - Exercise! Many of us sit behind a computer or at a desk for 8, 10 or 12 hours a day. This is not good for our health, or the mechanics of our bodies. Get up and walk around during the day, and if you can, head to the gym or outside for a jog after work. It will make your body AND your mind feel refreshed.
5 - See a counselor if need be. There is nothing wrong with sitting down face-to-face with an unbiased third party. Especially with such busy schedules, it's sometimes important to just talk about what is going on in your life, good or bad. If anything, speaking with a therapist might help you put things into perspective, and realize life really isn't that bad.
Stress is all around us. These are just a few tips to help you survive the daily grind, but there are numerous other ideas to consider as well. For example: try yoga, stay rested (yes, this can be difficult), eat well, and find personal time to just relax. Who knows if our stressed out society will ever make a change for the better, but in the meantime, try and alleviate stress so that YOU can lead a happier and more fulfilling life.
