How to bathe and groom Silky Terriers

Silky terriers may be frustrating when it comes to grooming and bathing them, but in the long run it is all worth it for the soft shine and sheen of their fur. These animals are known for their different types of hair than other dogs. It is very long, soft and slinky. Its by no means thick and rough, and shines much as they walk and run. With this different type of fur, handling and caring for them is a little different than another type of dog.

Silky terriers are not to be confused with Australian and Yorkshire terriers. Yes, they look very similar! But they are not the same breed and silky terriers fur is much different in texture. Silkys are very loyal and treat their owners kindly, this is another good reason that goes into bathing and grooming, they won't fight back with you! They require a great deal of time and attempt to make their fur stay as silky and strong as it is.

Their coats are very long and can hang to their feet, (unless you want to trim it just a bit) they have long hair surrounding their face as well and this can cause some problems for them since it can get into their eyes and mouth if left too long. They need their monthly haircut, so be sure to trim around their face very gently, especially along the sides and the top part so it doesn't get in the way of their eyes and even ears.

Now here comes the most tricky part, the daily task of grooming their coats. You'll need to spend about a half hour to an hour grooming their coat, making sure there are no tangles and mats. You also knew to untangle bits of grass or other particles that they may have collected in their fur. Make sure their fur is straight down as you brush, you don't want it to look like they got electric shocked!

For bath time, get some small terrier shampoo that specializes in their type of coat. Make sure you set up a nice and warm bath for them so they won't be too nervous. A deep conditioner is also needed for any tangles. Don't scrub them very much as you give them their bath, they have sensitive skin, just keep your main focus on their coat. Let the shampoo sink in by itself, it'll get rid of the dirt no problem.

After their bath, be sure to wrap them up in warm blankets as you dry them. You want them to get accustomed to the idea of bathing and not be too shaken up. Brush your dog's fur as its damp to ensure that the mats are all eliminated. Silky terriers need a lot of time for grooming and bathing but it helps in the long run and makes them as beautiful as they can be!
