What we can learn from pets and animals

Have you ever stopped to appreciate how simple and wise an animals view of the world is? They are creatures that function almost entirely on instinct, without the complicated extras that human beings add to the equation, and yet many of them seem to have more of a clue than any person I've met. If you stop to watch how your pet approaches the world, you could learn a thing or two.

I have always been dubbed an 'animal person'. I am one of those people who cannot imagine life devoid of fur and slobber. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to share a special relationship with a cherished pet, have also benefited from a special education on the meaning of 'unconditional love'. Whether or not we consider ourselves to be 'animal people' or have opened our hearts and homes to a pet, there is nobody who could not take a page out of the book of most animals.

With people, our relationships are so complicated that we often fail to appreciate what we have until it is gone. We harbor resentment. We judge other people. We fight with one another. We love each other deep down, but we spend more time obsessed with other things, things that have no importance in the greater picture, to show that love without shame.

Animals are essentially the opposite. Their view of the world is remarkably simple and uncomplicated and that is where they are one step ahead of human beings, regardless of their stature. Domestic animals spend each day showering their humans with love. Anyone who has ever loved a dog or cat or horse or what have you, will attest to this. I know that every day, no matter how rotten a day I've had, how many people in the world are against me, I'm going to go home to two dogs and two cats who think I'm the best thing since sliced bread.

Beyond this, it is amazing how protective animals are. And how fiercely loyal they can be. Human beings can be fickle creatures. Animals are not as easily dissuaded. They follow their instincts almost entirely without second guessing them or judging them as they happen. Humans complicate matters and wonder if they are doing the right thing - animals just do what feels right to them. They do not betray, or manipulate and generally treat others the way they are treated. We can only wish that more people lived their life this way.
