In the game of golf, there are a few great golf championships. Most notably, these are the four majors, however there are some further notable golf championships played by the top PGA tour players.

The Majors

The four majors refer to the US Masters, US PGA championship, US Open and UK Open. These golf championships generally have the most interest, and include the top ranked PGA golfers.

The US Masters golf championships, is held at Augusta Georgia. It is played on the same Augusta golf course, which includes some great golf holes. Overall, the Masters is an invitational golf championship, which includes the top fifty ranked players.

The US Open golf championship is open to qualification. The golf championship is played on a variety of golf courses, some of which are public courses. For the most part, the US Open remains one of the great golf championships in America.

US PGA championship is another major golf championship. It is the PGA's national championship, which has remained a top golf championship since 1916. Like the US Open, it is staged on a variety of golf courses. Overall, qualification is also open to professional golfers.

Another major championship is the UK Open, which is the only non-American golf major championship. Historically, the UK Open is the oldest of the major championships and while sometimes out of favour with US golfers, has since established itself as a top major. Overall, the UK Open is played on more links style courses such as St Andrews. It is also open to qualification for players outside of the PGA tour.

The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a bi-annual golf championship. Unlike the majors, it is played between two teams, the US and EU team, and is based more on match-play. The Ryder Cup is now very competitive, and has had some great championships.

World Golf Championships

The World Golf Championship is not a major, however it is a great golf championship. There are in fact four WGC events: the match play championship, the CA Championship and Bridgestone invitational and as mentioned the HSBC Champions. Overall, many of the top ranked golfers play in this PGA tour event with the match play championship including up to 64 players from the world rankings.

Overall, these are great golf championships. While the majors remain the most prominent on the golfing calendar, the World Golf Championship is perhaps the best championship outside the majors. The Ryder Cup is perhaps the most notable golf team championship.
