Poetry: Nighttime blues

by Lajos Becsi

Created on: October 30, 2009

Desert Blues.

A restive breeze wipes out her footprints

in the sand. Under a leaden sky the far

horizon disappears and slowly she too

fades away. As I look at her, I see her

seek where once her future started. I

vaguely note her dimly recognise the

augurs of her life. Those glimpses of high

Hopes, cortege of gold-reflecting rays,

Move stumbling by in eerie silence.

They promised that her deeds would have

An afterglow, a meaningful serenity.

But in her growing restlessness, I see

The nothingness in which she floats

And see her shadow even disappear.

I feel a dagger thrust when hearing her

Politely greet me, saying: How nice

Of you to come and see me, Sir

I smile. I sigh. I rise. It's time for me

to go. She, reaching out her hand, has

found an ancient way to say goodbye.

I bow and kiss her hand. Her smile

Lifts off the sorrow on my shoulders.

At least we lost our way together

Turn on yar lights, somebody yells

when I switch on. How nice, he cares!

He peers and sees my running tears.

Ah mon, ya'll be alright, he growls.

Of course I will, I lie, and go my way.
