What to look for in a gym or fitness center
With all of the commercials and advertisements bombarding us on TV, the Internet, billboards, and magazines it can be daunting to separate style from substance when choosing the best place to workout. There are several important considerations to keep in mind when choosing a facility, and sticking to these guidelines will help you find a fitness center to meet your needs and suit your personal style.
Gender Differences
Many fitness centers are gender-specific, and this can be a selling point. If the atmosphere makes you uncomfortable it is highly unlikely you will stick with your new program. On the other hand, if a co-ed facility appeals to you, cross the gender-specific facilities off your list and move on.
Equipment Type and Quality
If a facility has a world-class assortment of dumbbells and you prefer machines, this facility would be a poor choice. Choose a facility that specializes in the type of equipment you prefer, and you will be more consistent in your workout routine. There are many quality brands of equipment, but the proper maintenance or lack thereof can dramatically alter the performance of the equipment. Ask to use the equipment by getting a free pass to try before you buy. This will also give you an opportunity to check for cleanliness and take in the atmosphere during a workout.
Location, Location, Location
If you plan to workout during your lunch break you need a facility close to your work. The location of the business must match your time constraints. Remember, if the facility is too far away you are less likely to follow-through.
Fear of Commitment
A last and very important consideration is purchasing options. Facilities often try to lock you in via a 6 month or one year membership. You will usually be asked for a bank account so they can directly withdraw the money every month. If a long-term deal makes you uncomfortable ask for short-term options and shop around. Be a smart shopper and make sure the facility fits your needs and not their wants.
