Why does the first date set the tone for the rest of the relationship? I think the answer to that question is a relatively easy one, and the answer it that the relationship begins on the first date. Everything that you say or do is going to be remembered during the relationship. I was in a two year relationship, and whenever my girlfriend would get mad at me, I would hear about how the first date was just us watching a movie. So be careful what you do on the first date, you might survive, but you won't stop hearing about it.

The first date sets the tone of the relationship because the first date really is more about how you carry yourself as opposed to anything else. Are you a nice guy, are you polite, did you take her out somewhere fun? The first date is also a feeling out process, and so if you do anything to outlandish, the date will be over quickly. Remember, you have no track record with this person, so you need to establish a good chemistry more than anything else.

This means that everything that you do is going to be under a microscope. You don't know what she means when she says that she hates short guys, and she doesn't know what you mean when you say you don't want to get married. You could be kidding, she could be kidding, but unless you can see that, it will just make things awkward. Even if you decide that you are going to see each other again, it could make things uneasy going forward.

What would you think about someone after a first date if they had just come from the gym, and hadn't showered? You would probably think that they were badly skilled when it came to being social. I don't know anyone who would do that, but if you roll up in an old beat up car, and make her pay for dinner, she will most likely assume you have no money. It might not matter to her now, but it might matter if she finds someone else.

Issues like cheating in a relationship, marriage, and long-term security of your relationship really start on the first date. Even if no one says or does anything to kill the relationship before it begins, the way that you act, present yourself, and are during the date will make here think. Likewise, things she does will make you think as well. Everything that happens is going to have a chain reaction that either makes the relationship successful, or a failure.

The first date isn't really much more than a dinner, or some drinks. However, the implications of a good first date can have tremendous effects on the rest of the relationship. Whenever you go out on a date, make sure you look, act, and feel your best. That is a good way to make sure that you have a solid relationship going forward.
