Picking a major in college

What are you passionate about? This should be the question you ask yourself when picking a major for college. Many people choose majors for the wrong reason, money. What those people fail to realize is that choosing a major based on money, will lead to them having a job that they hate, then they will be unhappy and probably not be very successful anyway. Just think that what you choose for a major will determine the type of work you will do for the rest of your life, so shouldn't it be something that you love doing? To pick your college major first you should know what you are passionate and if you're not sure what that is just think what makes you excited or angry, what stirs the most emotions. When you find what you're passionate about you won't have to worry that it won't make enough money to give you the lifestyle that you want because if you are truly good at something it will pay off. For example many people complain that teaching doesn't pay much and therefore they don't want to be teachers; however if you are a college professor you can make over $100,000 a year as some of the best do. If you are truly passionate about something, then study it and do it because it will lead you to career happiness and allow you to prosper because you will be good at your job.

When choosing a major you should also take your time, if you are not quite sure about what you wanna do. Don't just pick a major and end up taking all the wrong courses when you decide to change to something else. Try to choose a major by the the end of your sophomore year in college, but if you cannot decide before then take all your general education courses and get them over with so that when you do choose a major you can jump into the classes relevant to your major and study the subject that you truly love.

Also remember that you don't have to do only one job with your major unless you go into something specialized such as nursing or accounting, but there are many majors that can prepare you for a wide range of careers. Many majors will allow you to do many different kinds of work and if you would like the ability to work in many different places you should choose a major that will allow you do just that. When deciding your major you can also talk to your advisor and get information on the majors your school offers and what you can do with them just make sure you carefully deliberate what you expect in your career and what you are passionate about and then you will be ready to choose your college major.
