Poetry: Death of a pet

by S.C. Kleinhans

A dozen birds sang soulful songs.

Feathered tears fell to the floors

of their comfy cages.

The snakes slithered uneasily.

Silent agony overcoming them.

Three curious cats closed in

on a sad scene.

Two dutiful dogs stood guard.

Over the pitiful pet.

The animals were agitated.

The reptiles were rabid.

Pain and confusion eagerly

consuming them.

A cacophony of chaos.

Grief spilling onto every surface.

They didn't know what to do.

They howled and whined.

They prayed.

But the man would not get up.

They nudged him.

They gently nipped him.

No one came and helped him.

No one came to care for them.

They'd lost their human pet.
