How to help older people to understand computer jargon

Created on: October 29, 2009

For people who have grown up on computers, computer jargon is very easy for us to understand. It is like a second language in fact. The same cannot be said for older people who are trying to learn it. It can be very difficult to understand computer language if you are starting from scratch. There are ways to easily learn it though.

Here are some ways to help older people understand computer jargon:

Dummies Books

Dummies books have helped millions of people learn and understand computer jargon. The language in these books makes it much easier for people to grasp what is being said. Computer jargon isn't just the shortcut language that a lot of people use when they are talking in chats. Computer jargon is any language that is computer related completely. It can leave an older person feeling confused and lost. Buy a For Dummies book to help.

Classes

There are classes that older people can take to learn computer jargon. Senior citizens can get classes at a very cheap rate. If you know someone who is interested in learning but is afraid they can't get the computer jargon, sign them up for a class or encourage them to sign up for a class. Getting training for it from someone who is a professional can help alleviate the pain of learning computer jargon.

Be Patient

If you want to teach an older person how to understand computer jargon yourself, you had better practice a little on your patience. It is hard for them to understand something that seems second nature to you. It can be very difficult for an impatient person to teach computer jargon to someone who doesn't already know it. Use hands on to get the point across. If the older person can see what you are talking about, they will understand it better. Don't use hard words that they won't remember. Use the proper word and then associate it with something else. If they can see it, they will have a much better chance of making it happen.

Practice

Practice is the best way for anyone to learn. The more you do it, the more you know about it. Help the older person practice what they have learned about computer jargon. Give him/her tests to practice with. Do this until you are sure they have the computer jargon down pat. Once they have it, they will feel like they have succeeded in their quest for knowledge about computer jargon.

There is no better feeling than to help others. If you help an older person learn about computer jargon, you will get a great deal of satisfaction from it just to see how proud that person is of themselves for their success. It doesn't take much of your time to spend with someone to teach them computer jargon. You just have to have patience in order to do it.
