Is music prohibited by the Sharia

The prohibition of music in Sharia has been a controversial topic for quite some time now. Being a great fan of music, the need to know the true ruling of music in Islam drove me to an intensive research on this topic. After many heated debates and research, I was able to derive the conclusion that music is indeed considered unlawful in Islam.

There are not one but many hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) which point to the status of music in Islam. There are many habits quoted in Sahih Al-Bukhari, one of the undisputed books of hadiths containing authenticated and reliable hadiths and their narrators, which clearly identify music to be forbidden. Narrated Abu Amir or Abu Malik Al Ashari that he heard the Prophet saying, From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful."

Acts responsible for intoxicating a person or straying from the correct path and laws laid down by ALLAH are considered to be forbidden and Muslims are strictly prompted to avoid them. The intoxicating effect of music has led humans to immoral and unethical behavior. Dr. Vollf Adler, professor in the Columbia University, discovered the harmful effects of music on the nervous system and its role in causing fatigue. Musical gatherings are known to harbor various evils and obscene acts. The lead singers of Nirvana and INXS were symbols of inspiration for many teenagers in America. Both were driven to commit suicide for no apparent reason. If music is a healthy activity then why is it mostly associated with drugs, sex, lust, suicide and sometimes profanity? Why are musicians driven to the most outrageous and immoral acts during their music concerts? Setting a guitar on fire or getting wild to an extent where mental balance is disturbed leading to the tearing of clothes and jumping on crowds is considered cool and normal.

In another hadith the Prophet has narrated "Music is a ladder to adultery." Today, music is polluting the minds of the younger generation. Musicals songs are now introducing lyrics that promote fornication and encourage shameless behavior. Slight observation of these lyrics will prove how easily incorrect and obscene messages are slowly penetrated in our subconscious mind through music. The most popular musical songs or the chart toppers are usually promoting sexual content. I have yet to hear a musical song that promotes love, shame and humility and the same time has inspired our generation to mend their evil ways.

It is concluded that prohibition of music in Sharia is undeniable and is also appreciated at the same time as the so called goodness of music has been overshadowed by its mind polluting, immoral and lust promoting nature.
