iPhone app reviews: Vector Tanks

by Joan Inong

If you love playing games that are 2D, then the Vector Tanks game app is right for you. I personally do not like this game because I do not like playing games that only use "blueprint style" graphics, but it has smooth gameplay and it's a good copy of earlier video games that were lacking more technologically advanced graphics. At any rate, Vector Tanks will keep me satisfied and entertained for a good while, and it is relatively inexpensive, too.

Vector Tanks is an easy enough game to understand. You have to try to shoot down as many tanks as possible before they shoot you down. It is basically a "survival of the fittest" type of game. When you do shoot a tank, you will be able to see the shrapnel flying all over the screen. Remember, however, that this game is in 2D, so the shrapnel look like pieces of 2D rocks coming towards you. Again, it is not a graphically pleasing game to me (maybe it's a generational thing), but the gameplay is smooth. When you shoot, the effects are almost immediate and I barely have a hard time controlling my player.

I also like that Vector Tanks takes advantage of the iPhone interface. For example, to play, you should have both thumbs on either side of the screen so that you can control your tank. I think that this is especially important for all iPhone apps to have. They should all make use of the iPhone's unique interface.

I do think, however, that paying $2.99 for this game is a bit much. I think that the price would be perfect at $1.99. It does not offer much in terms of creativity, since many games from the late 1980's and early '90s involved 2D graphics and simple gameplay. I think it would be much more fair for the developers to create a free version so that people can try the game before they buy it.

All in all, I think that Vector Tanks is a great game if you want to be teleported back a couple of decades. However, I don't think that kids and even younger teenagers would find this game amusing, unless they like the 2D graphics. Overall, Vector Tanks receives a score of 7 out of 10 for great gameplay and for allowing a few of us who are old enough to remember these types of games to reminisce.
