For an adult, gas pain can sometimes be almost unbearable. Imagine how much worse it must be for an infant who doesn't yet have enough experience to understand why they are hurting? There are some effective herbal remedy treatments for colic, but it is helpful to first know something about what it is and what causes it.
Colic is a gas buildup in the digestive tract of infants. This can cause mild to severe pain in the child. Even in mild cases, the child will usually be uncomfortable, at the very least, and will normally let you know of their displeasure.
There are many causes of colic, and some of them can be quite serious or signaling a serious illness, requiring a physician's care immediately. Others can be very mild, including the ingestion of air during feeding, and burping the infant or gently rubbing their backs to encourage them and help them to expel the gas can often resolve this.
There are many other causes such as allergic reaction, even to formula or milk. Herbal treatments for colic work best for the kinds of colic that fall between the extremes. It should be noted, however, that determining the cause is important, if only to prevent the situation from returning after it is taken care of.
It should be stressed that while the following treatments are generally thought of as safe, and person can have an allergic reaction to anything that is consumed. It is rare with these herbs, however it can happen, so the child should be closely monitored.
Anise
While different people may have different opinions, many will swear that anise is the most affective cure for colic, based on their experiences. Anise soothes the digestive tract, and is one of the safest of herbal remedies to use. Anise extract is mild, though no more than a single drop should be used at a time, usually with a little milk, formula, or water. This herb also has a licorice-like flavor most young kids enjoy. As an added benefit, it can even be swabbed on the gums of a child who is teething, for very rapid relief.
Adults, to control gas and flatulence, can even use anise tea.
If the extract isn't available, the seeds can be crushed and steeped in hot water, covered. Once the water cools down, it can be used for the infant having the difficulties. To save time and effort, though, it is a good idea to have a bottle of the extract on hand.
Dill
Though not as soothing as anise, dill has many of the same properties anise has, and the tea can be made in the same way. Dill also helps with complaints
