DVD player buying guide

DVD players are cheaper than ever. Even the inexpensive DVD player models have many advanced features. Finding the right DVD player for your needs is just a matter of comparing the DVD player's features to your needs.

If you've got an HDTV, getting a DVD player with HD upconversion is a good investment. Upconversion increases the DVD resolution to a high definition resolution as high as 1080p. However, if you want real HD, but have lots of DVDs, get a Blu-ray player that plays DVDs. There are also Blu-ray players with DVD upconversion available, so shop around.

While getting a DVD player can be exciting and fun, buying a bad DVD player is a miserable experience that will cost you. Chances are, you'll end up replacing a bad DVD player very soon after purchase. To avoid any headaches, check a website with DVD reviews before making your purchase. sites with expert reviews will help you to choose the right features, but a site with user reviews will give you a better idea of how long the player will last. Check a website such as Amazon.com and CNET for reviews on the DVD player you're thinking of buying.

Next, look for features that meet your needs. If all you need is a simple DVD player, don't pay extra for a player that's loaded with features. However, if you think you'll use them, features like USB ports, memory card readers, high speed search, slow motion, aspect ratio control, HDMI connections and Surround Sound are probably worth the price.

If you have lots of tapes on VHS, it may also be worth your while to get a 2 in 1 VCR and DVD player. However, keep in mind that if the VCR side of your DVD player dies, you'll either be stuck with a partially functional unit, or you'll have to do without the DVD player while you're getting the unit repaired.

Portable DVD players are more expensive than regular DVD players, but they're great for when you're on the run. If you do a lot of traveling, or if you like to watch DVDs away from home, a portable DVD player may be right for you. But if you think you'll never take your player with you when you leave home, stick with the permanent installation.

Be sure to check comparison shopping sites when you're shopping online for a DVD player. Prices can vary dramatically from store to store. Prices also fluctuate depending on the time of year. You'll get a much better deal on a DVD player a month before or immediately after Christmas than at any other time of the year.
