Making a boomerang from cardboard is simple and inexpensive. It's also a good craft project to do with your kids. By using the boomerang template included with this article, you can make a 3-winged boomerang out of a cardboard box that's made from chipboard, such as a cereal box. When you throw this cardboard boomerang upward at a 45 degree angle, it will bank in the air and return to you just like a wooden boomerang. You can also decorate this boomerang with materials such as colored markers or pencils.
Click on this boomerang craft template. Print the template out on regular 8 1/2 by 11 inch printer paper. Use scissors to cut out the large boomerang shape from the template. Open up a clean, empty cereal box and cut off one of its largest sides. Lay the cardboard unfinished side up on a clean, clear work surface.
Set the paper boomerang template shape on top of the piece of cardboard and hold it in place with one hand. Trace around the boomerang template with a pencil, making a mark on the unfinished side of the cardboard. Cut out the boomerang shape from the cardboard using scissors. Fold back the paper boomerang template along the dotted lines. Place the boomerang template on top of the cardboard boomerang and trace along the folded edges with the pencil. Use a straight-edged ruler to hold the cardboard in place as you bend the edges of the boomerang wings along the pencil lines. Bend the wings upward along this line at a 30 degree angle.
When decorating your boomerang, use materials that don't add to its weight or change its balance. When throwing your cardboard boomerang, grasp one of the blades between your thumb and index finger and use a side arm motion. Applying more spin to the boomerang will cause it to fly longer and make a more complete arc when it returns.Throw the boomerang with the upward angled edges facing the direction of the throw. To make the boomerang come back to you, throw the boomerang against the direction the wind is blowing. For longer straight flights, throw the boomerang in the same direction that the wind is blowing. Throwing a boomerang straight up when the wind is still will cause it to come downward in a spiral.
