A local weather emergency or natural disaster does not have to equate to distress or discomfort for you and your family if you take the necessary precautions before an event. Include your family members in the planning, preparations, and practice of emergency preparedness can better prepare you to handle any number of situations that might arise. Follow the simple steps outlined below to prepare your family for an emergency situation.
Assessment
The process begins by assessing the types of disasters that are possible in your area and you should customize your emergency preparedness kits and plans for those types of disasters. Possible scenarios to consider and prepare for are:
Hurricane/tornado
Flood
Fire
Earthquake
Winter Storm
Terrorist attack, chemical, biochemical, nuclear
Emergency Preparedness Kits
Once the possible risks in your area have been assessed, you can customize your emergency preparedness plans and kits to best suit the needs of your family members and be sure to include things such as warm clothes and blankets or clear evacuation and communication plans depending on the likely risks in your area. There are three basic emergency preparedness kits that you will need to construct.
Home
Your home survival kit will be bar far the most robust collection of essential items. Your home is where you spend the majority of your time and will need to be suited to provide basic supplies and provisions for every member of the family. In disaster scenarios, one of your main goals should be to return to your home if it is possible without incurring too much risk and it is allowed by law enforcement. Here are some items to consider when constructing your own home emergency preparedness kit.
Basics
Water - 3 days supply (1 gallon per person per day)
Means to purify water (bleach or tablets)
First aid kit
Flashlight - one for each person
Sleeping bag - one for each person
Dust mask - one for each person
Important documents
Money - enough for a few days of food
Emergency radio with NOAA weather
Cooking and food
Camp stove or Sterno
Cooking pot
Matches and lighter
Roll of paper towel
Paper plates, plastic bowls and cups
Food - MREs (Military meals ready to eat)
Canned soups, canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruits
Drink mixes, cool aid, coffee, tea
Crackers
Ramen noodles
Oatmeal
Dried fruits and nuts
Tools
Boots
Work gloves
Jacket, gloves, and cap (for each person)
Pliers
Crescent wrench
Screw drivers
Hack saw
Pocket knife
Hatchet
Rope
Tarp
