It really is a fundamental requirement to be a good speller and have satisfactory knowledge of grammar to be a successful writer.

To be a successful writer you need to get noticed and publishers or editors are not going to want to bother reading through any article of work that contains appalling spelling mistakes. Their concentration on reading your piece of writing would soon diminish while they try and decipher what it is you're actually trying to say. Rejection is usually the only way they will go.

Not only does a writer need to produce excellent work for it to be considered for publication they also have to produce the cover letter that accompanies it. Poor spellers will find that publishers probably won't even go further than that letter. If writers cannot make a very good impression on introducing themselves and their work by giving out badly spelt correspondence then they will continually be overlooked.

But being a bad speller doesn't mean it takes away the capability to compose interesting, readable and enjoyable pieces of work. It just means that the reader will have a far harder time focusing on the story. There is nothing more annoying than having to read a badly spelt article even though the actual story line could be quite pleasing.

Having the use of the spell-checker on the computer certainly makes your writing life a whole lot easier. A good speller will usually find that they use it on the odd occasion and will have presence of mind to understand that a mis-spelt word could actually have different meanings and as such will have two ways of being spelt. Accidentally writing 'moorning' will give you the choice of 'morning' or 'mourning' Good spellers will know exactly the word to use that would be appropriate to their writing and quickly change it. The corrections will therefore be quicker and less time is spent on rectifying and understanding the right word to use.

Writers who cannot spell adequately will always have problems getting their work seen. Even though they can get others to read through for them and make all the appropriate changes, the time and effort to go through that process will diminish the time they should be spending writing their article or script or novel.

The process of writing can be hard and daunting at the best of times but having the ability to be able to spell correctly goes a long way to the route of becoming a successful writer
