Dogs suffer depression in a similar way humans do. These causes can very, but are generally akin to lack of exercise, loneliness, feelings of worthlessness and illness. In nature, wild dogs can walk up to thirty miles daily searching for food. They generally travel in packs and follow a ranking system where each dog has their purpose and place. In a home environment, one or more of these can be lacking due to an unnatural sedentary lifestyle in a mammal build and bred for athleticism.
If you think your dog is suffering from depression, here are a few things you can try that can make your friend live a more healthy, happy life.
1. Dogs love exercise
Not only do they love it but it is a major part of their genetic makeup. Make sure you dog is getting enough exercise by taking him or her to a park or field to play everyday. Having a dog is a major responsibility and this must be done daily. Some dogs love to swim like Labradors and Newfoundlands and this can be just as fun for you as a pet owner. Fetch is great fun and great exercise for both. If none of these locations are available, daily brisk walks can suffice for average to lower-energy dogs or smaller dogs.
2. Dogs need socialization
Dogs are naturally attracted to other dogs as either companions or enemies. Getting your dog involved with other dogs in a friendly manner can be an exciting time for your pet. Find a friend of yours with a dog and set up a "play date". Weekly interaction between your dog and a companion can give your pet something to look foreword to week to week. Thus filling the need for consistency and canine companionship.
3. Dogs like to have a purpose
Training your pooch to do things around the house can be very fulfilling to your dog and help you out as well. Training you dog to fetch the newspaper, clean up you children's dropped meatloaf, or simply be a guard dog will fill this need. Another way could be teaching them skills in Frisbee or obstacle competitions for fun or sport.
4. Illness
If none of these seem to cure your pets depression, there may be something more serious going on. Your dog may be in constant pain due to illness. If you even think it is possible your dog is sick get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible. They could be having any problem from a common cold to serious depression as a disorder or even a life threatening malady.
