Poetry: Smiles

by Geoffrey Schmitt

There are smiles that go from ear to ear

And smirks that sometimes causes a tear

toothless gummy gaping grins

From infants or from aging chins

Or ones with gaps just one tooth wide

That shyly we forget to hide

Sometimes our joy so great abounds

We laugh, guffaw at every sound

The muscles in our faces tire

Because our hearts are full of fire

The best of smiles are invitations

To join in loving expectations

Or quiet smiles for moments after

When I love you brings silent laughter.
