Common dating rules for Christian teens

Dating is a very delicate topic in Christian circles. Many Christians have strong opinions on the subject. Some say that dating is wrong; they believe that Christians shouldn't date. Others believe that dating is good, and that it is healthy for a Christian to date. If you decide to date, be careful, relationships are tricky whatever your age.

11 Commandments for the Dating Christian Teen

1. Don't rush into anything. You are young. You have plenty of time. Don't feel that you have to be in a relationship at the moment.

2. Don't over commit. If you do choose to be in a relationship, don't over invest yourself. Set emotional limits for yourself. Don't let your emotions get tangled up. And, don't let someone over commit to you.

3. Set your priorities. Make God-given goals, and let your relationship line up with them. God saved you for a reason. Figure out what it is, and go after it with all your heart. Let nothing stand in your way.

4. Talk to your parents. Your parents love you. Let them in on your plans. They will have good advice. God gave you to them for a reason. They have walked in your shoes before; they will be able to help.

5. Talk to other people you respect. Let your youth pastor know what's going on. Find a trusted teacher or other family member. Find someone who will "keep it real"; don't to people who will tell you what you want to hear.

6. Choose the right person. Make sure they believe and behave the same as you. Different beliefs or different behaviors will cause you both problems. Don't settle for good enough.

7. Choose the right time. The right person at the wrong time is still wrong. Make sure it's the right time for both of you. Does this relationship line up with God's plan for your life? What about God's plan for their life?

8. Don't make it to serious. Keep it fun. Don't propose to each other right away. Get to know each other. Enjoy each other's company. Do things together that friends do, play games, and go places. Build a good foundation to your relationship

9. Never be alone. Bad things happen in the dark. Keep your relationship in the open. Go out in groups. Spend time with others. If you want to talk, use the phone or text message, but keep it clean.

10. Limit physical contact. A little touching goes a long way. Don't temp fate. The strongest people are still weak. Respect your bodies. Be careful

11. If you make a mistake, talk to someone. Don't feel like you're the only one who has blown it. Let others know what's going on in your life. Ask for prayer and council. It works.
