Facebook etiquette: Tips for posting your status updates

FaceBook is a great place to keep in touch with the people you know and meet new friends. Just remember that whatever you put there, everyone can see. There is such a thing as FaceBook etiquette. Not everyone pays attention to what they should do. Some people go a little bit too far in their status updates.

Here are some FaceBook etiquette tips for posting your status updates:

Watch It

Watch what you say. You don't need to let everyone know everything that you are doing. Keep your status updates on FaceBook cute but not too personal. People don't need to know that you are heading to the bathroom. There are just some things that you shouldn't say or do on FaceBook.

Details

Leave out details that will tell people exactly where you are. It is a dangerous practice. If someone decides to stalk you, you have just left yourself open for danger. When posting your status updates, make sure you leave out that information which could get your killed.

Emotions

It is okay to have some emotion showing on your status update. Watch how much you do it though. Some people take great offense to it and don't understand emotion at all. That leaves you open to critics who think they know more about your situation than you do. Leave the major emotions to yourself so that you don't end up regretting sharing part of yourself with others.

Rudeness

Being rude should not happen when you are posting status updates on FaceBook. Although some people may deserve to be treated rudely, you don't have to bring attention to it in such a public manner. If you must say something rude, say it to the face of the person you are upset with. It works better because you may find a resolution that way. Posting it on FaceBook doesn't allow you to come to any resolutions.

Moods

It is okay to share your moods. People love to back you up and make you feel better. Don't go overboard though. You can get a little too much attention that way. Sharing is good, too much sharing can lead to bigger problems.

Don't post anything on your status updates that you wouldn't want to see someone else post. Not everything has to be open to the world. There is such a thing as private messaging. Use that for your really horrible moods or your anger. You know who you can trust to keep it to themselves. This will help you work through the problem without having everyone know what is on your mind. Keep some secrets a secret. Share fun things on your FaceBook status updates. This will let people see the good side of you and leave the bad sides where they belong, in private. These things follow you a lot further than you think they will.
