If you build it, they will come. The famous line from the movie Field of Dreams may have worked for a baseball field, but it doesn't necessarily hold true for a website. Fortunately, there are a number of free website promotion techniques you can utilize to attract traffic to your website.

For starters, your website needs to have interesting content that is rich in the keywords your customers would use to find you. Using the right keywords throughout your website will not only improve your website ranking on search engines like Google and Yahoo, it will also drive customers looking for your specific product to your site. Also feature an informational area on your website that includes a number of articles that pertain to your customer's problems or interests. Provide information that they'll find useful and come back to you often for solutions.

Another free website promotion technique is to become a regular participant in social media. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are wonderful ways to promote your website. Whenever you leave a comment on any posting, be sure to include a link to your website. Consider setting up a business Facebook page and link it to your website to encourage customers to follow you on Facebook as well. Use Twitter to highlight any news, special sales or other relevant information and link the post back to your website.

Providing a free e-book available for download on your website is another free website promotion technique. Make sure your free e-book is on a topic that your customers are interested in. For instance, if you provide green holiday greeting cards, consider posting a free e-book on 10 tips for a green holiday, on your website. Promote the free e-book on Twitter, Facebook, green and environmentally-focused blogs. Get the word out about the free e-book by writing a press release and using the press release distribution services like those provided by PRLog.org or PRWeb.com.

Start a blog on your website. Post new, insightful and keyword-rich content that will drive customers to your website. Take the time to read other blogs that are focused on the same area as your business. Make comments when appropriate and include a link to your website with your comments to attract additional traffic to your website.

Write articles about topics that pertain to your website. Sites like ezine.com allow individuals to include author articles with a link to their website. See if leading blogs in your area of interest take articles from guests. They will often provide you with a byline and link to your website.

With a little creativity and effort, you can increase the traffic to your website by utilizing these free website promotion techniques.
