How obesity can affect a cat's health

When it comes to some disease cats are not very different than humans and like any disease if it is detected early enough it can be treated. These diseases should be very familiar to you such as diabetes millitus, problems with the heart, arthritis, urinary infections and a very serious cats disease called hepatic lipidosis. Cats require meat as they are naturally meat eaters and without the proper diet your cat your cat will become overweight. By feeding your cat treats and an improper diet you will essentially love your cat to death.

Obesity in cats is not due to just one particular thing but rather a few of factors. It can be hereditary but most cats that are obese are clearly from the food they are fed and their environment. Most cats today are indoor cats and don't get the amount of exercise that is required to keep them slim. Combine this with a diet of high fats and carbohydrates and you have the making of a fat cat.

Cats don't have the enzymes to digest carbohydrates therefore when we feed our cat's manufactures food they are getting food that they can't digest and it turns into fat. They lack the enzyme called Amylase, which is usually found in most animal's mouths. Cats have to rely on this enzyme that is found in the pancreas of cats. Cats were not meant to ingest a high amount of carbohydrates yet this is what is found in most cat food and treats that is on the market. This adds to the obesity in your cat by turning the carbohydrates to fat.

If your cat is obese then it's time to place kitty on a diet. Most of the dry cat food on the market needs something to hold it together and this comes in the form of flour and sugar. This is not the best choice for your cat; in fact wet food would be a better choice if you have to feed your cat a prepared food. It would be better if you prepared your cat food yourself using meat at least your cat would not be eating preservatives that are found in market prepared food.

Keep in mind when you place your cat on a diet don't be in a hurry for your cat to lose weight. Just like us it takes time to take those extra pounds off. It is better if you do this slowly by making small goals at first even if it takes up to a year to get those extra pounds off your cat. By doing the reduction slowly presents a better chance that your cats excess pounds will be gone for good once they lose the weight. Once you have accomplished this it is easier to maintain a healthy weight in your cat by switching from cupfuls and serving ounces instead.
