She sits with tears streaming down her pale, somewhat freckled face. Her throat whelped in knots making it hard for her to swallow or even breathe. Thoughts of her dreams become a vivid nightmare; a distant world far beyond that she can not reach. Rage begins to envelope her whole being as if she were doing something to defend herself from a terrifying experience. Slashing out in anger at the humid spring air as if it were going to attack her and snapping into a million pieces, she contains herself into a frenzy of exhaustion. Wiping the tears from her swollen eyes and down her thin face, she walks out of the darkness of the room into the light of another.
Searching for her sanity, she looks around her debutante room for her powdery white crystals. Coming across her Virginia slims, she picks them up with her heart pounding and she notices bright red blood covering her naked skin. Uncertain of what she has done or will do next, she sits on the edge of the bed asking God for forgiveness and strength.
"Lord forgive me, I must be going insane", she repeats over and over.
Stillness surrounding her, she glares around the room in a distraught daze, feeling a little uncertain of reality.
Staring at the mauve and blue flowers pasted on her wall, she perceives them as coming to suck her every breath. Becoming slightly dizzy and nauseous, she starts to weep. The walls closing in on her though they are going to suffocate her. Extinguishing her cigarette and lighting another, she sits very still. Quickly, standing to her feet, she pauses, then cautiously walks into the hallway leading to the stairs. Fear surrounds her as she approaches the awaiting darkness.
Noises and voices cloud her head as if a thousand nails penetrated her brain. Dizziness over took her as she saw a shadow float across the the door leading to the study. Tears filled her eyes with a burning sensation of salt in a wound. She opened her mouth to scream with only a gasp released from her lungs. Her body fell to the floor with a hardness as she reached out to the stranger for help. Her vision blurred into a fog of denial and regret. All she heard was a man's lingering voice, words she could not understand as she fell into a deep slumber.
