Children want to get into the excitement of giving gifts as well as receiving them. They want to do what they see mother do. If she wraps gifts, they want to wrap gifts. When allowed to participate, they are delighted. Of course first efforts will be mostly that, efforts, but thought are what counts. And little first efforts of gift giving are precious thoughts indeed!
Their first little creations will probably be a page of crayon marks on a white sheet of paper. Yet wouldn't grandma simply adore this as a gift? Select a pretty frame, add a colorful mat and help them wrap it for grandma. Be sure they sign their name as only they can. Most toddlers are beginning to learn how to recognize their name in print and this is an important part of learning as well as gift giving. Hold their hand and help them spell their name. This will give the gift an added importance.
Teachers of preschool students have the most wonderful ideas and mom will do well to take note of how their child is taught while at the same time playing. Isn't it absolutely wonderful the way they proudly hand over their school craft gift to mom or dad on Mother's Day or Father's Day? Wise moms will save these for their grandchildren to cherish. Store them in these large Manila envelopes with their name on them. Maybe a not or two attached so the memory of a special time will not be forgotten.
Circles and squares and other shapes are easy to cut out from construction paper and often these can be turned into clocks, funny faces, smiling faces, houses, teepees, and whatever. The idea for crafting for preschool students, as their teacher well knows, is to encourage them to coordinate their thoughts into actions. This is a very hard work assignment for these youngsters, but they do manage with lots of practice to get to where they need to be by each year.
Crafting with play dough is another preschool activity that can result in gifts worthy of giving to members of the family. With help these toddlers can create small little bowls and other little items shaped into beads - that can be strung as bracelets or necklaces - into tree ornaments. With help of a bigger sister or brother, any number of tree ornaments can be created that will make wonderful gifts for others.
Three little balls of white clay rolled into a round shape can be glued together to make a snowman tree ornament. A black dough hat, a red scarf and black shoes and a touch of read for a mouth, a tiny spec of black dough for eyes. Punch a hole in the hat area before the play dough dries so a bit of wire can be added as a hanger.
Again, I emphasize, with preschoolers it is not the gift but the idea behind the gift. Most often these crafting projects are done at kindergarten or preschool and are sent home to the parents. Yet, mothers who are at home caring for their youngsters or grandparents who are looking after them are in need of ideas on how to keep these children occupied and useful. This article is for them. Allow these children to feel important and never let them get the idea they are in the way or are a nuisance.
