Fun family crafts for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is made for crafting and for family fun. Who is there among us that isn't inspired by the fall foliage? With a clear blue sky overhead and the dazzling brilliance of the warm colors of autumn and the crunch of leaves under our feet, we naturally want to get involved. A world of wonder is ours for the taking. Each age is inspired by this wonder in different ways but all are encouraged to combine efforts and have some fun before it all vanishes into memories.

Together, leaf raking on a clear breezy day, can be a lot of fun. Of course you are clearing the yard for your Thanksgiving guests but need it be work? You don't necessarily have to make lasting things to call it crafting, any and all togetherness can be fun. Have a discussion about what can be done with leaves other than bagging them for disposal. Why not bag and mold them into likenesses of Pilgrims. Those tan small Kroger shopping store bags will be prefect for the head, hands and feet. Larger black or white garbage bags will do well for the torso and limbs, Stuff the torso with lots of leaves and only a small amount of leaves rolled into arms and legs. Innovate and have fun. You and your family will figure out a way to make them look like the first Thanksgiving celebrants. Just ask the kid and they will be full of ideas. Old Belt buckles glued onto an old pair of dad's shoes, etc. and other such fanciful notions will work just fine.

For a different take on the same theme, why not use feed sacks - coffee sacks or some other coarse material - and stuff them with leaves. You get the idea! Those fallen leaves are material for art and it is fun to see how they can be made into family fun. Tired of working with leaves after the children have tumbled into the heap over and over have had a rip-roaring fall afternoon, go inside, rest and think of easier family fun crafts. Sometimes just thinking about crafting is almost as much fun as doing it.

Quietly, as an after dinner craft project out on the patio or porch, why not make a large Thanksgiving wreath. You will need either a purchased wreath form or you can make them with vines you collect from the wild. These are plentiful in the fall in their outdoor setting and at craft stores. The nice thing about buying them at craft stores is they are already neatly rolled and tied together. Although, you can easily do this yourself with a little patience and a pair of cotton gloves to protect your hands. You can use whatever natural items you select to make
