Product reviews: Hershey's Bliss

Hershey's Bliss is a milk chocolate bar that has a bit more sophistication than the traditional flat Hershey's milk chocolate bar. The 1.3-ounce (36g) bar consists of five, breakaway pieces that can be shared or eaten in decadent delight as a single serving. Hershey's milk chocolate has been a favorite confection for more than a hundred years. The Bliss bar was introduced in April 2008 by the Hershey's company.

According to Michele Buck, Senior Vice President, Global Chief Marketing Officer of the Hershey Company, "The chocolate masters at Hershey created Hershey's Bliss for consumers who appreciate the everyday joys of life. Hershey's Bliss Chocolate is meant to celebrate that joy..." (Reuters)

The packaging of the Hershey's Bliss bar is elegant. The milk chocolate melt-away variety features a dark chocolate colored wrapping with taupe accents. The word Bliss is stylishly placed for central focus. It is not a brightly wrapped candy trying to catch the eye of a child. This package says serious chocolate for a more sophisticated palette.

When the packaging is opened, the strong aroma of Hershey's milk chocolate wafts directly to the nose. The chocolate scent entices the senses and makes a person want to sink his or her teeth into the rich chocolate. The bar consists of five, breakaway pieces that are connected. The bar color, a lush milk chocolate color, is appealing. The Bliss theme is continued on the bar with an imprinted curvy wave that mimics the Bliss name on the outside packaging.

Unlike the DOVE single chocolate bar that also has five, breakaway pieces, the Hershey's Bliss bar does not have a snap to the chocolate when one piece is separated from the other. It is a soft separation. The chocolate is too creamy to snap and is slightly soft to the touch.

The first taste of the Hershey's Bliss milk chocolate with melt-away center is very creamy and smooth. The milk chocolate is rich and milky. Each piece is not a solid piece of chocolate. The center contains an additional offering of Hershey's milk chocolate with a slightly different consistency. You can see the where the outer chocolate surrounds the melt-away center. The outer and inner portions blend seamlessly for one delicious and satisfying bite of chocolate.

In addition to the milk chocolate with melt-away center variety, Hershey's Bliss bars are available in plain milk chocolate and a dark chocolate variety. Each Bliss bar weighs 1.3-ounces (36g) and is about the length of a Snickers or Mars candy bar. The milk chocolate with melt-away center variety contains 180 calories per bar and twelve grams of fat. This bar does not contain any trans fat but does contain an allergy warning for peanuts and tree nuts.

Hershey's Bliss chocolate bars can be found in most grocery stores, retail chains with candy aisles, gas stations, convenient marts and at various online sites including Nextag.com. One bar generally retails for about eighty-nine cents (U.S.) although Bliss bars can often be found on sale at Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Target for about fifty cents (U.S.).

For those of us who do appreciate the everyday joys of life, the Hershey's Bliss milk chocolate bar with melt-away center is a joy not to be missed. For less than a dollar, a chocolate craving can be satisfied without resorting to eating waxy chocolate. The Bliss bar is a cut above many milk chocolate bars.
