WHY CHRISTIANS NEED TO DEFEND THE CELEBRATION OF CHRISTMAS
My most favorite time of the year is upon us: the Christmas season. I love the music, the gaiety, the shopping, the excitement; I even like the snow for this short period of time. It is a time of year when everybody should be happy; everyone should be trouble free. It doesn't matter if you are wealthy or poor, old or young, man or woman; the reason is the same. Whether you believe it or not, Christmas is our celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and that should be a happy moment for all.
Christmas was not even thought of until well after Christ was born; roughly 400 years after to be more exact. Christians have celebrated the birth of Christ for over 1600 years. The word itself means the Mass of Christ. It's not like there was a pagan holiday sitting out there waiting for something to happen so it could commemorate it. Christmas was created as the day we would celebrate and commemorate the birthday of our Lord. That is the reason for the holiday, pagan or Christian; that is why it was created. No matter what we do or how we phrase it, nothing will change the origin of Christmas.
We have no idea when Christ was born so we can't really give him his birthday rites, but we can give him a day, and that is what we have done with Christmas. I also love the pagan ritual of Christmas: the gift giving, the brightly lit Christmas tree, the Christmas carols. I just relate the pagan rituals to things in the real Christmas story. Giving of gifts commemorates the wise men bringing gold and frankincense and myrrh as gifts for Jesus. The brightly lit Christmas tree with a large star on the top represents the field of stars and the North Star in the middle guiding the shepherds on their way to see Jesus. Singing of the carols symbolizes the angels singing in the skies as they announce the birth of our Lord.
You can't get away from it. Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ. That's what makes some people so angry. They try so desperately to erase Christ from Christmas and always end up failing. Of course, some of their attempts can really rile a Christian. I was playing with a Christmas train that played 12 different Christmas songs designed to represent the 12 days of Christmas. Not one of the songs was Jesus based. No Silent Night or Oh Holy Night or anything like them. It was all Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman and so on. Sometimes we Christians just have to chuckle to ourselves. What is up with that?
