Problems arise in every facet of life. Whether a problem occurs in the workplace or on the home front, knowing how to effectively solve problems can make a difference in the quality of life and relationships.
Individuals have different approaches to solving problems. Some immediately look around for help, others muddle through, doing the best they can without a plan, and still others tackle the challenge with a well-thought-out strategy and persevere to a satisfactory resolution.
If you are in the latter category, then you are one of the fortunate, who knows how to face life's challenges without becoming overly discouraged or frustrated.
If you are sometimes overwhelmed, and find yourself lamenting about all the unexpected problems that arise and add stress to your life, then you might want to refine your problem solving skills.
How to effectively solve problems:
* Identify the problem
We can't fix what we don't know is broken, or how it got that way. If you are frustrated at work, impatient with a child who will not cooperate, or having anxiety about another life issue, take time out to think about what is really going on. Maybe you need more training for your job, or your child is acting out over difficulties at school. Whatever the issue, you cannot find a resolution until you've figured out the root of the problem.
* Gather information
Ensure you know all the details surrounding the problem. An important component to problem-solving is determining if you have all the facts before attempting to take action. Perhaps your child is being bullied at school, and that accounts for his anger and uncooperative attitude. You are unable to effectively address a problem until you know all the facts.
* Examine the control factor
Decide which elements of the problem are in your control, and which are out of your control to resolve. You cannot change other people or force them to act in your best interest. The resolution to your problem will only be effective if it can be accomplished through your own efforts or changes in behavior.
* Use process of elimination
Make a list of all the potential solutions to your problem. Examine each one from all angles to determine the probability of success. By process of elimination, you will be able to discover which solution will work best for your situation.
* Choose the best option
Once you have explored all of your options and determined which will afford you the greatest opportunity for success, you are ready to proceed toward resolution.
Methodically working through your problems in this manner will enable you to be in more control of your life, thus increasing your feelings of self-esteem.
Your sense of independence will be vastly intensified once you have mastered the art of effective problem solving.
