Is Christmas becoming too commercialized?
Christmas has become too commercialized. Children don't know or care what Christmas represents. People can barely feed the family or pay their bills, but when it comes to Christmas, everyone will spend three times more than their monthly expenses.
Christmas is a day that represents the birth of Christ. Midnight mass or services have always been important. Very few people attend mass or services anymore. Most children aren't taught about Jesus. There was a time when people would spend time together making homemade ornaments. Families would sing carols at home and throughout the neighborhood. Cakes and cookies would be baked and given to their neighbors. It was the thought that counted.
The kids are only concerned with what they are getting for gifts. By the time Christmas comes along, a child's wish list is two pages long. If you give child money to buy others family members a gift, they will surely buy themselves something too. The thought of giving and thoughtfulness for others is becoming obsolete. There was a time when children would make gifts to give to their family and friends. These types of gifts were very much appreciated.
The stores start advertising for Christmas as soon as Halloween is over. Advertisements for Thanksgiving are but a few. People don't give gifts for Thanksgiving. The stores are overstocked with items waiting for people to come and give them their money.
Granted people don't need to spend their money, but you like to be a part of society. Everyone just follows what the next person does. Most people just get entangled up with what everybody else is doing. Other parents buy their children a lot of toys, so to keep our own children from feeling out of place; we end up spending more than we should.
Jehovah witnesses, Moslems and people of other religions who don't celebrate Christmas even spend their money at Christmas time. Their excuse is that they don't need a holiday to give children gifts. This is done so their children don't feel left out. They too, have become absorbed in the Christmas chaos.
People who don't believe in God or Jesus push their beliefs on society. The nativity and other religious decorations are no longer allowed in some public places. Schools will celebrate other holidays that are not religious, but Christmas is nothing more than an excuse to get a week off. Public schools are not allowed to teach anything about religion.
Christmas has really become overly commercialized. It has become all about money!
