What is the main principle behind Helium?

What is the main principle? As I look around the site, there are many fundamental aspects of the site that make it such a successful place to write for. However, there is one principle that stands out above all the rest of them. This singular principle is what keeps people coming back to Helium to write again and again. It is what makes Helium different from the other websites out there, and it is what Helium has that no other website for writers does nearly as well.

This principle is the principle of community. The community of writers that Helium has it he single biggest reason why there are so many good things happening here. Without the community, Helium wouldn't be the same site that it is today, and it wouldn't be nearly as fun to write for, nor nearly as innovative of a website. When you really stop to think about it, the community is what drives everything that goes on.

When you write an article, the community rates it for consensus so that everyone has a say as to how good the article is, and not just an editor. When you rate an article, you are rating not only for yourself, but you are rating with others to form a consensus on how to best rate an article. When you need a critique, or want to suggest an article, you go to the community to offer your ideas, or to ask for help.

This really is how you build any business regardless of what the business is. You want good teamwork from everyone that is involved in the effort, and you want good communication and feedback from not only the management, but from the workers as well. In this case the management is the Helium staff, and the writers are the ones who produce the content needed. It isn't a perfect management/employee scenario, but it is as close as one would see here at Helium.

Nothing happens that doesn't benefit the community of writers, and nothing happens without the consent of the writers. If Helium launches a program or requirement for payment, the people at Helium listen to feedback. The writers didn't like having payment tied to having a rating star, so that was dropped. Writers wanted a place to promote their work, so Helium created the zone feature to help out. They are always listening to the community.

Without the community, Helium would be less dynamic then it is today. By combining the opportunities to get published with the chances to get paid in so many ways, the community aspect of Helium is really what sets it apart, and is the driving principle behind what Helium is trying to do in order to attract the best writers. Whether you are here to learn, or here to get paid, most stick around specifically because of the people they meet here.
