Should sixth grade be in middle school or elementary school?

Typically, sixth grade is the time when eleven year old children are released from their safe, comfortable elementary school and thrust into the tumultuous middle school environment. Managing multiple classes, independently navigating the building, and standing tall while walking past a crowd of eighth graders-eleven must be too young, right?

As with most controversial issues, the question of sixth grade being in middle school or elementary school can be validly debated from both sides. On one side, eleven year old children are being introduced into a somewhat mature, 'teenage' environment. On the other side, change is a necessary part of life. Exploring each side of this issue in depth can lead to a sound opinion.

Just too young

Children develop, emotionally and physically, and greatly varying rates. Additionally, previous life experiences can contribute to their current emotional levels. Often, children who are not emotionally prepared for sixth grade in a middle school environment can be adversely affected in several aspects of their young lives. The stress of changing classes and having a lockers and interacting with older children in a less structured environment can possibly wreak havoc on their academic progress. Why not play it safe and give all children just one more year to emotionally develop while in the safety of their elementary school classroom?

Ready or not

Change is inevitable, and to attempt to protect children from all adversity is just not practical. Responsible, nurturing educators are prepared to address concerns children, as well as their parents, have when entering the middle school environment. There is no guarantee that 100 percent of children would be emotionally prepared to enter middle school as seventh graders. Stepping out of our comfort zone is necessary in order to grow as a person, and teaching that to our children is an invaluable life lesson. How can we deny children the early opportunity to flourish into mature, productive students?

Conclusion

The question of sixth grade being in middle school or elementary school does not necessarily have a concrete answer. Sixth grade is sort of a middle ground, much like seventh and eighth grade as well. All stuck in the middle-not kids, but not yet adults-this is the reason why they may belong together in 'middle school'. Middle school is a unique place where all students are trying to find their way, trying to mature, and trying to grow into well adjusted, young adults.
