Retail can be a very trying industry indeed. Dealing with angry customers all day, and all the random complaints that you get during the day. Co-workers can be a pain too, and what about all the bosses that you have to deal with. Retail is stressful enough by the nature of the business, but there are so many other ways it can be stressful. So how do you cope with working in retail?
For most people, a job in retail is something that they have just until they are going to be done with school, or until they no longer need to save money from a second job. These people cope with their jobs by realizing that it won't be forever, and that one day they will be able to march into that office and tell their boss that they quit! Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is what keeps most people going during the dark days.
However, if you plan on making retail a career, what do you do to cope with the job? One of the best ways is to make friends with your co-workers. There are many debates as to whether or not that you should be friends with your co-workers, but there is nothing wrong with having some connections at work. These are the people that are going to share the experience with you, so they should be able to vent to you, and you to them.
Another good way of coping is to realize that a job in retail is better than no job at all. When you get home at night, just be grateful that you have that home, or apartment to come home too. Be happy that you have money for that soda and chips that you are going to have after work, and that you had a car to drive home in. Retail might not get you as far as you hoped in life, but it will be steady work, and will provide you with enough to be comfortable.
Keep in mind that there is no need to personalize everything. The customers aren't mad at you, they are mad at the fact that something went wrong. It usually isn't your fault, and all they need is a good answer, and if you can be nice to them, they will appreciate it. Just tell yourself that it is only work, and isn't your job to care, but to help as best you can. If they aren't satisfied they can take it as high as they want, but some people will never be happy.
Working in retail has plenty of trials and tribulations, but there are ways that you can cope with the work that you have chosen. If you are a student, or are saving up for something, just realize that the hard work you are putting in now will pay off. If you feel like you are going to make a career of it, you are going to have to take the good with the bad, but that there will as much good as there is bad. I know from experience.
