Man this is easy. There is nothing to fear when a wine list is presented. You don't have to be a connoisseur of the grape to understand the intricacies of wine.
So here's the scenario:
You're on a second date and you get to a decent non-chain restaurant. First on the list is drinks and appetizers, right? Wrong, order the appetizers before the wine and meal. Wine should be paired with your main dish. Very simple rule of thumb is match the color of the wine to the dish's sauce or the color of the meat. Light meat (chicken, seafood, pork) = Light colored wine. Dark meat (beef) = Red colored wine. It really is that simple. Of course if all else fails then ask the server what wine they recommend with your dinner, they will be more than happy to help you out.
So there you go. Don't be afraid of the list. If you're going to be there a while order a bottle it's cheaper. But remember the server is there to help you out and don't forget to leave a good tip for their help...
