Are you in a relationship gone awry? Has he or she left you demolished with your heart in the gutter after running off with your best friend? Or have you come home to an empty house and your lover has moved out without a forwarding address? Well, someone could say Here's A Quarter, Call Someone Who Cares, as Travis Tritt did in 1991 which reached number 2 on Billboard Charts. Everyone has heartbreak sometime in their life and Country music is where you can turn to find the song to best illustrate your feeling of being "done wrong".
Throughout Country music history there have been multitudes of hit songs about cheating and other transgressions of morality that deserve a category all on their own. You can't talk about cheating and Country in the same breath without thinking of Roseanne Cash. The famous daughter of Johnny Cash crossed both country and pop charts as a hit in 1981 with Seven Year Ache. Rumor has it that she penned the hit as her own marriage fell apart and since then it has touched millions of people as they felt her words hit home with clarity. Garth Brooks scored a lasting spot on the list of cheating men ballads with The Thunder Rolls in 1991. His silken voice reminded everyone of how it isn't really fun for either the cheater or the cheatee.
When soldiers go away to war, their fears of coming home to a love that has crumbled were epitomized in Kenny Rogers' tune Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town. In the fall out of the Vietnam war while veterans came home wounded and tried to piece their lives back together, the realities that lay waiting for them didn't always mean a happy ending. Kenny's heart breaking tune described a man paralyzed and the hell of being incapable of doing anything about it. The devastatingly handsome singer Tim McGraw's Please Remember Me became the anthem of soldiers hoping their loved one would be there when they returned, unlike the infamous Ruby.
Even heartbreak has its triumphant moments when the feeling of the power to let go happens. So if you are looking for some Country songs that can paint the silver lining around your dark clouds of trouble, here is a couple. You'll Think of Me sung by Keith Urban was a cross over hit that millions of people empathized and sang along with wishing they could tell their lost love that they were doing fine. Patty Loveless made the point earlier in the game with Blame It on Your Heart. The upbeat sound laced with lyrics about someone being a lying, cheating, no good, mean and mistreating cad whom she tells off with style still gets played by those recovering from the lovesick blues.
However, no one will ever make another Country song about heart ache like George Jones' signature song, He Stopped Loving Her Today. The aching voice of George tells about a man stopping his life and never loving again until he died. She comes back to find him only it is too little too late. Yes, Country music has many songs to choose from if you want to listen to a melody that reflects your feelings and your life. Of course the classic style of cheating songs started with Hank Williams crooning his honky tonk melodies and his discography has many to choose. From Country's roots to present day, no other genre has ever produced as many hits about bad relationships and the hard road to loving again so take a listen and see what you think.
