New Year's Day is often overlooked for holiday crafting because it follows closely to Christmas and adults are mainly resting and recuperating from the efforts put forth in November and December. Mothers with overactive children can easily acclimate their crafting skills. Start with a clean sheet of paper and tell them to draw the first day of the year. They will, of course, have a great time and will pick some event important to them. Crafting is meaningful and is about the only way knowledgeable teachers and parents can get a hint of how kid's minds work.
Or possibly they can be directed to folding the paper into various shapes. Boats would be an excellent choice. For directions search out the internet and while there learn more about paper folding for future projects. Valentine's Day on February 14th is one they will not want to miss. Hearts are easily traced and cut out from construction paper. To make them fancier, add touches of doilies to their edges. A little read heart on the front on a home made card decorated with a lollipop will say I love you to whomever receives one.
March 17th is Saint Patrick's Day and everyone knows four leaf clovers represent this day. It is the time for wearing green and showing your pride in being Irish; even when you are not! These cut outs in green construction paper and fastened to a coat lapel can say to others they are aware of the day and are in on the fun.
For a larger door decoration shamrocks can be cut from cardboard and either colored green or wrapped with green tissue paper. Or for a more natural gift for mom and in climates where clover is up and plentiful, pick a bunch and tie with a small white ribbon. What is easier?
Easter of course is a more serious holiday and children will naturally want to honor the day with lots of different crafts. They need not be complicated or expensive. In keeping with the reason for the celebration, which is essentially, a new beginning or renewal for life, honoring our Creator, flowers are often a great gift. Of course there are abundant rabbits, chickens and Easter eggs on market shelves and they will be receiving these in their Easter baskets. But on a lesser level and for fun, baskets can be created easily created from paper or from fabric. Staple a handle to the constructed basket line with a small doily - looks like lace - fill with jelly beans, a candy rabbit or chicken, and give to friends.
