Networking is all about sharing. Sure your business benefits from meeting people and then either turning them into clients or getting referrals out of them, but it all starts with giving first.
Even the smallest business can find something to share with others. This might be in the form of free informational articles on a topic of interest in your specialty area or a donation of time towards a worthy cause for a member of your community. All these efforts add up and eventually pay off in a bigger stronger network of potential customers.
You may not realize just how connected you are already. Check out these avenues for networking your small business for ideas on how you can build on what you may have.
Start with Friends and Family
Those closest to you are ideal contacts to help spread the word about your lines of business. Reaching out to friends and family is easy and yet often overlooked, but leaving out this key group of people is a mistake because they are likely to be the most eager to talk about what you do.
Get Involved in the Community
You don't need to turn into an activist or get up on a platform to send signals into your local community. Showing up to neighborhood meetings or chatting with neighbors connects you with others in a way that makes them feel loyal to you without ever having done business. If people are familiar with you they are more likely to recommend your business. It really is as simple as that.
Extend your Reach Online
Because every business, both large and small, has access to more or less the same technologies, when it comes to social networking on the internet, it is important to take part. Creating a web presence not only reaches a vast audience, it also makes a direct link between you and your potential customers. There are many ways to use social networking to your advantage that are easy to do and the best part is they are totally free.
Participate in Trade Shows
Trade shows are a great opportunity to meet new people and of course they are also a golden chance to check out the competition. There is usually a fee to rent a booth but this is definitely worth it for the type of exposure you can expect to get from any reputable trade show organizer.
Networking can take all sorts of different forms, but the key to a successful networking campaign for your small business is to have a plan of action and to stay visible and positive. Remember that image is everything, both on and off-line.
