How music industry influences your teen's lifestyle

In the mid-1950's, the world was introduced to Elvis Presley. His hip shaking form of music known as rock and roll would take the music industry by storm, and the lives of teenagers would never be the same. Each decade brought with it a new introduction of a music craze. The 1960's claim the Beatles and the introduction of peace anthems as the Vietnam War became increasingly unpopular. We cringe when we think of 1970's disco and 1980's hair bands. The 1990's claim grunge and the broadening appeal of hip-hop. It is hard to envision musical eras without picturing a teenager embracing the trends that particular style of music promoted. Bell bottom jeans with peace symbols, polyester suits, big hair, baggy pants, and flannel shirts all embody different fads evoked from music of their respective times. How is the music industry influencing your teen's lifestyle?

Music of today encompasses a broad spectrum of styles. Your teen, depending on his or her personality, may have access to any number of musical genres to fit a preference. No matter your teen's choices, the industry will most likely do quite a bit to dominate his or her mindset. Teenagers are often searching for an identity during these formative years, and musical artists can help fill that gap.

1. Fashion

How your teen dresses is one of the first ways he or she will attempt to show individuality. Musical artists generally are given a wider berth for their fashion choices than actors and actresses. Musicians are expected to be creative and quirky, and their clothing styles reflect these traits. Since the 1980's and the introduction of MTV, teens have been able to see and connect to their favorite musicians more easily through visual media. Impressionable teens are always ready for a new trend and are eager to emulate their music idols. Have you seen your young teen gain an interest in a more "nerdy" look? Thank artists like Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake with their newest trends of horn-rimmed style glasses and tailored clothes.

2. Behavior

Your teen's behavior is also directly and indirectly affected by the music industry. Lyrics tell a teen to act a certain way and to do a certain thing, and your child readily complies. Artists make news headlines for their behavior, and your teen copies them. Artists who are addicts glorify drugs in music and in their own actions, causing your teen to follow. On the other hand, artists known for good deeds and charitable works may influence your child in a positive way. The Jonas Brothers are known to wear purity rings, signifying their choice to wait for sex until marriage. Many teen fans choose to follow suit.

3. Attitude

Often musical lyrics can influence your teen's attitude toward things in life. Songs can often be degrading to women, law enforcement officials, teachers, parents, and even to themselves. Your teen may begin to develop the same attitudes reflected in the music he or she is constantly blasting. Music glorifying suicide can be especially dangerous. Conversely, music may help your teen's attitude. Many artists produce anthems meant to encourage, unite, and empower.

There are so many ways your teen can be easily influenced during these years of his or her life, and the music industry is a prime example. Remember that these influences are not always negative, and that music in general can be a wonderful form of expression. However, as a parent, it is your job to monitor your child's musical tastes and to be aware of how the industry is affecting him or her. Talk to your child about lyrics in a favorite song and promote the positive messages in music, while discounting the negative ones. Even above music, parents have the most influence over their teenagers lives and choices.
