As much fun to make as it is to eat? No, not Jiffy Pop. Rather apple crafts! Although, not all of these will be edible upon completion, here are some fun crafts for children to make using sweet smelling and delicious apples.
*Please note: Some of these crafts require coring or cutting of the apple. If working with small children, you will need to do any tasks involving sharp tools ahead of time. If working with older children who are allowed to use cutting tools, please remind them of this one safety rule: If it slips, where will it go? Be safe and have fun!
Wormy Apples: An absolute favorite among little boys, this craft is both easy and inexpensive.
Materials needed:
One apple for each child
One gummy worm for each child. But have extras in case one breaks or gets eaten!
Simply bore a hole in the top portion of one side of the apple using either an apple corer or a paring knife. Then have the child insert the tail end of a gummy worm into the hole. That's it! You now have a wormy apple!
Note that it is not necessary to have polished apples. Just be sure that they are good to eat. The more blemished looking; even slight bruising is okay, the more "wormy" the apple will look.
Apple Head: This is a wonderfully child-friendly craft. It is 100% kid-safe. You can basically give the materials to the children and let them create!
Materials needed for younger children:
One apple for each child
A handful of whole cloves for each child.
The idea behind this craft is for the child to create a face on the apple using the cloves for eyes, nose, mouth, etc. but with very small children, it is okay to just let them poke the cloves into the apple and create any design they like. Or you can use a toothpick to poke a face or design for the children ahead of time, then let them poke the cloves into the design you created. If this seems too simplistic for older children, try this:
Materials needed for older children:
One apple for each child
Whole cloves
Parsley
Raisins
Carrot tips
Children can use cloves for eyes, carrot tips for nose, raisins for ears and parsley for hair. Or be creative and use any small fruits or herbs to create the apple head features. Just use a toothpick to poke holes into the top of the apple then push parsley stems into the holes. Break toothpicks in half and stick one end into apple leaving the other end protruding from the apple. Then push the raisins or carrot tips onto protruding end of toothpick. For added fun, have an apple head contest to see
