Best ways to keep your house warm on a winter's day

Being cold in your house is never pleasant but there are tips you can follow to make sure your house stays warm even on the coolest of days.

One of the first things you should do is check your house for drafts, even the smallest of drafts can make your house considerably cooler, covering large drafts caused by gaps in windows and door frames with insulation tape should keep the heat in. The bottom of your doors can let cool air in, buy or make a draft excluder to lay across the bottom of your door to keep out any unwanted cold air.

The roof of your house is a key culprit in helping to lose heat from your home. By replacing the lagging in your loft can dramatically help to stop your house losing heat. If you are in the UK you should check with your local council as grants are available to help insulate your home.

When it comes to heating your home you should make sure you only heat rooms you are using, there's no point spending money and energy heating that spare bedroom no-one ever goes in. You should keep the doors to unused rooms closed to help keep the heat in areas which you spend the most time in.

Your curtains will play a key role in keeping your house warm. You should keep them open on a sunny winter's day as the sun's rays are extremely good at warming even on a cold day. You should dress your windows in heavy curtains during the winter as thick fabric will help to insulate your house and prevent heat from escaping from the windows.

If you are not keen on having your heating on constantly you should set your heating on a timer. Making your heating come on an hour before you get up and an hour before you return home from work will help make your home feel a little less chilly. By taking the edge off the temperature it should then be easier to keep warm.

Cooking is another way to keep your house warm, a lot of heat is produced when using your oven; you should utilize this to keep your house warm by leaving the oven door open after you have finished cooking. As the oven cools the heat will escape into the rest of the house, helping to warm it.

One of the best ways to keep your house warm in winter is to fit your heating with a thermostat which will automatically switch your heating on as soon as your house drops below a certain temperature.

If you follow these tips you should feel the benefit on a cold winter's day. However, if you're still a little chilly make sure you keep thick blankets nearby just in case it gets really cold!
