As far as the Christmas 2009 digital camera race goes - the Nikon D3000 has got to be in the running. I've researched this one myself. I've owned a compact digital camera for several years which I still use - it's very useful as far as portability is concerned - you can stash it away in a small bag. The capabilities of a compact digital are limited though and it was time to upgrade to an entry-level digital single lens reflex camera - which is why I chose the Nikon D3000.
What do I like about it? First of all - compared to other digital single lens reflex cameras I tried out - it is fairly small and not very heavy. I've noticed it is popular with most female photographers I've spoken too - at the risk of generalising - perhaps we have smaller hands than our male colleagues?
Secondly I was attracted by the innovative 'guide mode' technology. If, like me you're on a steep learning curve with digital single lens reflex cameras you may find this useful. The guide mode helps you find your way through initial technicalities easily as it explains settings and functions in plain english. (I'm a writer who sometimes needs good pictures to illustrate my work. I'm not a professional photographer). Taking great photographs requires technical knowledge and careful study. I've found that the 'guide mode' certainly makes this easier in the first instance. Although there's still a lot to learn...
Thirdly, if you choose a Nikon D3000 then you have a big brand name and a huge reputation to fall back on. Along with the camera body I received a basic 18/55 lens which I understand will suit most purposes to start off with. It's possible to upgrade with more specialised lenses later on.
As far as price is concerned - obviously this varies so shop around and compare specs. The D3000 is one of the cheapest in the Nikon range. This particular camera comes with a two year manufacturer's guarantee - I purchased it from a local dealer (which is part of a national chain of stores). This was important to me because if I have to travel to another city for an assignment and the camera breaks down - I can get it fixed fairly quickly.
The Nikon D3000 is also a good gift investment for a teenager who is planning further adventures in photography. You could purchase the basic set first of all and have gift ideas left for next Christmas (a tripod or additional lenses?). At any rate the Nikon D3000 seems future-proofed and will stand the test of time.
