Thank you notes after the interview should be thought of as part of the whole job search and interviewing process. Ideally, they should be written and mailed with in 24 hours of the interview. Getting the note sent in right shows your enthusiasm and can be an example of your follow up skills.
Most thank you letters should be hard copy, placed in the mail, however tech jobs are fine to send via email. Once you get used to writing these letters, they will be easy to complete and you should plan to write them the end of the day of each interview.
Keep these tips in mind when writing your letter.
1: Letters should be typed, especially if your handwriting isn't the best.
2: Letters should be brief, remember the interviewer is busy so you don't want to bore them with too much reading.
3: Thank the interviewer for their time. Express your enthusiasm and point out something specific the interviewer mentioned that you were impressed with or that you were excited about.
4: Review something that was discussed during the interview and bring in how you would be an asset in that area. For example, if you are applying for a sales position and the interviewer talked about the importance of relationship building, you may want to add a comment about your proven skills in that area.
5: If you felt you were unclear about something specific now is the time to clarify.
6: Add something in the letter if possible that will remind the interviewer who you are. Sometimes after too many interviews, they tend to blend in to one another. By reminding them of something particular you may have talked about, your letter will stand out.
7: Briefly review your skills and qualifications and how they will apply to the position that you interviewed for.
Send the letter to the person that you interviewed with. If you met with more than one person, send one to each, altering it slightly to personalize it for that person. Take business cards from each interviewer so you have their full name, title and contact information.
Make sure you proof read your letter and if possible, have someone else read through it as well. Think of the letter as your personal representative, if it has grammatical and spelling errors that is how you will be remembered, regardless of how well you may have done in the interview.
