The supression of Christianity in todays society is not actually what is going on. What we find being suppressed is God, and by extension, moral absolutes. From a Christian point of view God = Jesus = Holy Spirit. To supress one is to supress them all. God is the Father, the Creator, the Ultimate Arbiter of our lives, Jesus is our King, our Guidance, our role model, and the Holy Spirit is our Intercessor, our conscience. As you can see from their roles, in all three personnas the Triune God, controls and directs our lives.
As humans, or more accurately as sinners, we resent the intrusions of those limits on us. We want God, but only on our terms. How can we do sex, drugs and rock and roll, when God is directing us? We can't. And since satan has a firm grip on the world, the more we resist, the more insiduous his attacks. Relativism, cultism, paganism, atheism, agnostic; these are all tools to put God in the background.
How does that work?
We justify pornography in our personal lives because it is not hurting anyone else, and it enhances our sex lives. But through Christ we know that to look at a woman with lust is to commit adultery. But to keep our sinful desires we try to act like their is a distinction between naked pictures and real people. We act as if their is no consequence to our action.
But the issue is not what our looking does to the other person, it is what it does to us. The lust in us is the problem. A naked person in and of itself is not a sin, but our thoughts on someone elses nakedness is. And there is the reason we have to suppress God. Since he is in us and of us, we have to act like he is not there. If we act like he is here, then we can't do those things that are sins.
As we justify our sin, through the the relativism of modern man, it becomes easier and easier to put God behind us. The reason for this is because a state of continued disobedience to God alienates us to Him. The reason for this is to give us the choice of God or sin. If we dont seek God, then He wont know us when we are judged. God is our moral absolute. If it is not Godly then it is sin. Period. No amount of wiggle room. When Christians accept that, then we can not be suppressed. That is the litmus test: go by Gods laws and gain eternal life. If you refuse them, lose eternal life. For in truth, not everyone is going to make it to heaven, and if every true Christian is heard, then we, and God, are not suppressed.
In a sense, the movement to try and supress Christianity is real, however. Christianity is an evangelical religion. We seek out non-believers. People in modern society dont want to hear that they are wrong. Mis-guided Christians interpret Christ words to mean that we should let them have at their sin, without interference. As more and more Christians jump on the go along and get along wagon, the easier it is for non-believers to legislate and regulate our activities. In one sense, we are supressing ourselves.
And one good point, to close out the article. This Triune God is the God of Abraham and Moses, Joshua and David, Mary Magdaline and Ruth. You have to find him through the Bible, and you have to learn about him through the Bible. Once you find him, don't let anyone talk you out of him.
