The word Sabbath purely means day of rest. When GOD finished creating heaven and earth, (the Bible claims that HE did it in six days) and on seventh day HE rested. The analogy was to give an example to the man HE was to create, that man needs to rest. GOD didn't tell Adam that on any particular day he should rest, but that after toil the body would be in need of rest. The day that man chose to rest was his to determine. GOD was not rigid in that respect, he allowed for tolerances regarding the rest day. When the man felt the necessity for rest, he took it, but GOD's example was work six days and rest on the seventh. At the same time man was to honor and worship GOD on the day of rest, because that is the reason for being, to worship and honor GOD! This answers the age old question "Why are we here on earth." The day of rest was put into practice because man cannot exist toiling day after day after day. He needs to rebuild the muscles in the body with nutrition from his toils, he needs to clear his mind with an escape from work; to, as it is put in todays lingo "chill". He needs to re-cooperate so that he can start again on his toil. Work is a never ending entity. The Bible says "If you don't work, you don't eat". None of us would be here if our forefathers had refused to work, so you know that they believed in some part of the WORD of GOD.

The same applies to the land. When the children of GOD were led into the promised land, they were told to work the land for seven years and to let it rest the whole of the next year. Did the Israelites follow directions? NO! That is why they were led into captivity for 70 years, because they owed that much rest to the land that GOD had given them. They worked it and worked it until the land could not comply, hence the famines that are recorded in the bible. GOD gave man all the tools to succeed on the earth, yet man refused to follow GOD's advice and instead decided that GOD's way was not the only way and started to stray from The LORD's teachings. Working 24/7, plowing and plundering the earth, creating little tin gods ($) to worship instead of the Living GOD, living for self, and we wonder why the world is blowing itself away in murders and mayhem, why trinkets cost an arm and a leg, why no one has any regard for another, because we have left HIM who created us to please ourselves at another's expense. Today we are sowing what we reap.

The day of rest was to be mans choosing, to replenish, first, his walk with GOD, second, his relationship with his spouse and family, friends, third, get into a relaxed state of being, so that when the next day comes, he will be ready to start earning his keep, yet again.
