It seems to me that every year older they get, the more difficult parenting becomes. It's always a shock to see your little baby form an attitude but it also has amazing benefits to see their adorable personalities to take shape as they grow. Although it may feel like you are loosing control and chaos is surrounding you, you should take a step back and realize that it's important to enjoy this time in your child's life because they will be off to kindergarten before you know it.
Two year olds are trying to sort out where they fit in this world. In your eyes they are your little baby still but in their eyes they see themselves as an independent little individual. Because they are individuals, they want to be in control of all things around them which can get frustrating for them when obviously the entire world can't be controlled by a two year old. Frustration doesn't stop them from pushing on through power struggle after power struggle but it does cause some shocking tantrums and screeches you might not have expected from your little angel.
Change is so difficult for little ones so be patient and give plenty of warning when making any transitions. For example, if you are at a play date and it's getting close to time to go home, let them know five minutes before your leaving. Give incentives and offer choices which you can deal with. When it's time to leave don't rush them off because they need time and want to feel like they have a say. Mind you, you cannot sit there and argue back and forth for 15 minutes about whether you're leaving or not. You can however, ask your toddler if he or she remembers where we put our nice shiny boots and if they are able to help you find yours. You can let them try to put on their own boots and help you find the car. Of course, sometimes there is no convincing them and they will not come without a power struggle.Make sure you bring snacks and toys everywhere you go. If you come prepared, chances are you'll be able to leave more successfully. When they are fed and well rested your day will go so much more smoothly. Try to prevent tantrums and power struggles by catching them before they happen. Watch for cues that they are about to have a melt down before it happens. They might act like they don't need anyone's help but if you pay attention to their cues you'll be thankful.
Distraction and reverse psychology will become two of your best friends this year. They will outgrow and outsmart those methods eventually so only use them when all else fails or they will catch on quickly to your scheme to avoid conflict. If you are patient, loving and consistent with your toddler the two of you will be able to accomplish anything. This is a time in their life that they learn the most so take advantage of every opportunity. Most importantly, learn to laugh and enjoy every day of the "terrible twos" and then the age of two might just become your favorite age of all.
