Every home owner or apartment dweller needs to be knowledgeable about the basic operation and maintenance of the appliances in their dwelling. The furnace is one of the most important major appliances to deal with, yet one that can often be easily overlooked until something goes wrong.

One simple way to help your furnace stay up and running at peak performance is to maintain a regular schedule when it comes to changing the furnace filter. Check your furnace operating manual for recommended changing guidelines and adhere to what they suggest. For the relatively low cost associated with a new furnace filter, you may prevent costly repair bills and prolong the life expectancy of your unit.

The first step to changing your furnace filter is to locate the existing one. If it is made of plastic or metal, it is probably a permanent filter and only needs to be washed or vacuumed and replaced. Otherwise, your filter is disposable and must be removed and replaced with a new one. Slide the filter carefully from its holding tray and check the side framing for the correct size to purchase. The measurements will read something like 16" x 20" x 1". Slide the filter back into the furnace until you're ready to make the switch.

Armed with the necessary measurements, you can head on over to your local hardware or home-improvement store. There you will find a wide range of furnace filters in an assortment of sizes. This is why you checked your existing filter before making a purchase. Find your size among the offerings. While you're at it, why not pick up two or three? They are relatively inexpensive and, by having spares available, you will be less likely to postpone the next scheduled change.

When you return to your furnace, pull out the filter and examine it closely. If you haven't changed it for awhile, it may be so clogged with dust and grime you can't even see through it. All of this dirty build up makes it harder for your furnace to operate at peak efficiency, forcing it to work harder to heat your home. This extra strength will cause the motor to wear out sooner than necessary.

The old filter is garbage. Simply discard it without ceremony and slide the new one into place. Replace the furnace panel if you had to remove it to get to the filter and you're back in business.

There are a few important safety features to keep in mind during the process. First and foremost, play it safe. As with all electrical appliances, turn off the power before you touch any internal workings. If you're having trouble finding your filter or having trouble accessing it after you've found it, don't take any chances. Call your local furnace technician. Ask for directions or schedule a service call so they can give your furnace a maintenance check and instruct you on all future filter changes.

Regular furnace filter changes are one of the most economical do it yourself maintenance repairs in your home. A little diligence in this area is like putting money in your pocket, saving costly repairs and replacements down the road.
