How to build a successful business freelancing from home

The internet has a vast number of articles all purporting to have the secret to freelancing success. Everyone wants to sell their "Top 10 Tricks to Earn $5000 a Month While You Sleep". Freelancing is particularly prone to this because it is a largely independent process and it can be a long and lonely road. Those who choose to go on this adventure may at some point be ready to seek out pointers from those who claim to have been there before. This is why it is important to remember that real success is always the result of careful planning and perseverance. It rarely ever happens overnight and ever rarer still does it happen without any effort.

The following are some tips to help guide those who would like to buckle down to the business of writing for a living and are not afraid to do real work.

Set Writing Goals

Goal help to focus effort and they can also be used as a measuring stick by which to chart progress. Each writer will have a different set of priorities, but a sample might be "To write 7 articles a day, five days a week." This helps to set down a framework for the day ahead and motivates action.

Work on a Schedule

It is important to keep a routine. Sure freelancing is supposed to be about working on your own time, but you also need to find a rhythm that works. If you are a morning person get the bulk of your work out of the way early so you can use the afternoon doing less intensive projects like scouring for new writing opportunities.

Have a Web Presence

Freelance writers should build a web presence. It may not be necessary to have a personal website, but you should definitely start amassing a body of work on a content website, or maybe even run a personal blog. This creates a foundation for your online persona and gives potential clients a way to assess the quality of your work.

Don't Take on More Than You Can Handle

This is extremely important. Always try to under-promise and over-deliver and never be caught in the reverse situation. Taking on more work than you can handle because you are blinded by the possible income is a big mistake because then you risk damaging your reputation to deliver on time.

Set Time Aside to Look for Work

Complacency can quickly turn moderate success into failure. Relying heavily on one or two sources of income because they have delivered in the past is foolhardy. It is much better to keep in the know about new opportunities and occasionally check the marketplace to make sure you are getting the most for your investment of time.

The appeal of freelancing draws many into the fold each year, but only those who enter with a plan actually achieve success.
