No, I do not hate my job, but my job hates me. My job is to write creative articles that reflect the wants of those that sponsor products or ideas. When the creative urge to compose something of significance comes to me my fingers stop on the keys. Then the joy of writing becomes work. What would those writers of old have done if faced with making a living writing content for commercial advertisers? There would be no classics in book form or comic books. Where would the bright lights of Broadway shine when the only reward was page views?
When I fake the joy for a dollar then write creative things the joy comes through on the page in front of me. The keys move as if by some other energy and then what needs to be said is said. It doesn't matter who is the reader or what they think or rate or care the therapy is mine. The relief is better than any lesson plan in a psychology book. Writer's write, that's their job. That finished page wipes out all the stale memories of pennies for profits and the rejection that follows an art that is too personal in the final analysis. You see yourself in every word and paragraph if you love your job and your job is to write. Any hatred comes across in the tone which is the only arena that writer's fight their battles.
Late nights and the look ups and fact finding and the grind of sentence structure when you wish it was as simple as free form poetry. Until you try it and the descent into the soul for a real truth is a lot harder than a catchy slogan for some soft drink that you never tried, appreciation is yet to come. There is hope that if you can stay true to your belief in your talents that the layer of commercialism that surrounds this job can be removed.
So regardless of the situation and the circumstances that surround me, I cannot hate my job. Regardless of whether the job hates me and provides a framework that does not take the time to listen to creativity in writers. That caters to the news media that regurgitates the same items or jingles and spiffy slogans, hopefully there is more for those that stick it out and love what they do. Those that do not hate their jobs, but those that have made their jobs antagonists in the creative process.
