Eating disorders can cause several nutritional disorders, as well as heart and kidney problems, and if they become severe enough, they can eventually cause death. Women are more likely to develop these disorders than men, and they are much more prevalent in the developing teen years. The growth of the body is at its full peak during these formative years, which adds to the severity of both the potential short term and long term damage.
Eating disorders are often accompanied by or associated with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse and because of this it is treated as a mental illness rather than what many experts believe it actually is; a mind-body illness.
Because of its serious behavioral problems, it is paramount to get the depleted nutrients back into the person with the eating disorder as quickly as possible with vitamin and mineral supplements to bring this balance back into order.
The most renowned psychotherapists in the world could talk to some people with this disorder until they are blue in the face or until the sea runs dry, but until the mind and body become balanced again, it will usually not do any good at all.
Eating disorders do a lot more to the affected person with this imbalance than just cause drastic weight loss; it damages virtually every part of their body. It affects the hair, which is usually the first sign of a severe deficiency, but it also affects the brain and the nerves, the blood, the heart, and the kidneys. However, it does not just stop there. It also affects the muscles, joints, bones, all of the body fluids, the intestines, as well as the skin.
It is not just a disorder, it is a very serious situation that if it is not treated very quickly the affected body may never be the same again, especially if is damaged in the very important formative years.
Eating disorders have three distinctive forms. The first is Anorexia nervosa which is where the affected person firmly believes that they are fat and even as they loss several pounds and become thin, they are still convinced that they are fat. The mind-body connection is out of balance and needs to be controlled.
Bulimia nervosa is a condition that involves periods of overeating that is quickly followed by some type of purging; usually by self inducing vomiting or by laxatives. The mind-body connection is again out of balance. The third form is where binge eating takes hold and it becomes completely out of control.
