The best fitness centers in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has A LOT of gyms to choose from. A newcomer to the city considering a gym membership could be overwhelmed. Here are some descriptions and pointers for choosing a gym in the Windy City (and another note for newcomers - the moniker has nothing to do with the wind - it refers to politicians).

Bally's

Bally's locations around the city are generally few and far between. There is one far north in Rogers Park near the Evanston border. I have never been in that particular location, but geographics alone suggest this is difficult for most people to get to, unless you live in a far north neighborhood. It is situated in a plaza just off the Howard CTA station. The Lakeview location is nothing to smile at. It's not that clean, generally short on equipment, and the staff is less than fully supportive. Not too mention you'll find a few creepy gay guys walking around at all times. If none of that bothers you, the price may be worth it. The downtown location is a little better. It even has a pool. More equipment can be found here, as well, but it is still not that clean and the clientele is a little on the shadier side.

XSport

This is the best buy in my opinion. Memberships start at near Bally's pricing, but what you get is a gym that is relatively new in about all its locations. Speaking of, more and more are popping up and they tend to be located near major intersections providing for easy access. TOS of equipment including boxing facilities, basketball courts, climbing walls, you name it. The staff is very friendly, you get freebies when you join like a personal training session and tanning, and the clientele is generally friendly. You will see more meat-heads here, but the gym quality makes it worth putting up with.

Fitness Formula

These are relatively well priced gyms. I only joined one for the location. It was in my building. But I admit the facilities are kept very clean, they have nice amenities like steam room and massage on site, personal training is available, and the locker rooms have large flat screen TVs. The equipment is all rather new, but there isn't a lot of duplication, so you may be waiting for use.

World Gym

Generally run down, it does have a fair amount of equipment and a decent price tag. The locations leave something to be desired though. Generally in less than desirable parts of the city, I have heard of fights breaking out in the locker rooms and the staff is not so friendly. You get what you pay for, here.

Crunch

Crunch gyms are another newcomer to the scene in Chicago. They are a little more like an XSport. They look upscale, have decent amenities, and aren't too expensive. The downside is they are usually rather small, and so you will be waiting forever for equipment during peak hours. Staff is alright.

Athletic Clubs (EAC, LPAC, LAC)

I've never been in one of these facilities as the price is ridiculous in my opinion. The LP club has an outdoor climbing wall and a little more space than the others, but the gyms aren't all that large and if it weren't for the exorbitant price keeping most people away, I would guess these are almost always overcrowded. If you have that much money to burn, give it a charity.

Cheetah Clubs

This is even worse as far as price goes, and I really can't imagine any great pros here aside from, again, lack of crowd for the simple reason you are paying out your a$$ just to walk in the door. Not necessary.

Equinox

The last in the overpriced group. I don't know what the deal is with these. They are only in ridiculously expensive neighborhoods, offer little more than most gyms, and are WAY overpriced. Don't do it.

Hope this helps. Happy gym hunting!
